Make a Difference Day (MDDAY)!

Layettes-of-Love-Group-Photo.JPG

Twenty-nine volunteers gathered on Oct. 22nd, our nation’s largest day of service, to make a difference in our community!

We prepared baby clothes for packing in our layettes, worked on fleece baby blankets, and knitted tiny toppers (baby hats) as part of Layettes of Love, a day of service in honor of our founder’s 150th birthday this fall. Mary Virginia Merrick, whose cause for canonization as a Catholic saint is open, gave us a legacy of care for children in need that continues to inspire us all. We are so proud to have shared this day of service with 30 other Christ Child Society chapters and 1600 volunteers around the country!

Empowering Our Leaders: Telling Our Story

Board members Margaret Strong, Christina Amundson and Lambi Newsham attended the National Christ Child conference in Bethesda this past September.  The seminars and workshops centered around the theme of “Empowering our Leaders: Telling Our Story.” One of the highlights was a mass at Blessed Sacrament, Mary Virginia Merrick’s church as well as a stop at her home in D.C.  Monsignor John Enzler, head of Catholic Charities in DC,  presided over the mass and had a lot to speak about after being with Pope Francis just days before .  It was a treat to see framed photos of Mary located throughout the first floor that were strategically placed in the location where the picture was originally taken.  And as a coincidence, member Tracy Stabler’s parents still live right next to Mary Virginia Merrick’s house and Tracy was married at Blessed Sacrament church. Six degrees of separation!

Beginning Advent with a visit from the CCS National President

We are so thankful that our National Christ Child Society Board President, Anne Kelley, worked a visit to our chapter into her busy travel schedule this month. She spent time getting to know our board, sharing her goals for her presidency, and talking about the cause for the canonization of Mary Virginia Merrick, our founder.  She was able to meet some of our members and experience our home mass held at Peggy Kane’s house on December 2nd.  What an inspiring way to begin Advent together!  Read more...
